Barrow Cemetery in Akershus

At Fonbekkhagan is a very well preserved and very well maintained beautiful iron age barrow cemetery. The barrows are oriented on a line going from North-West to South-East following a natural edge of a large flat terrace. The main road goes just next to the north west tip of the site and there are several information posters. The barrows are very well preserved and there are so signs of damage to the cemetery.

The site consists of 11 burial monuments, seven round barrows and four long barrows. The largest round barrow is located in the middle of the line, it is a beautiful conical round barrow with a clear ditch around it, it is 24 metres in diameter and 2,5 metres in height. It does not seem to have any damage to it. The smaller round barrows range in size from 8 to around 17 metres and 1 to 2 metres in height. They are all clearly visible.

The largest long barrow is in the cemetery's south-eastern end, it is a beautiful long barrow, around 40 metres long, 6-7 metres wide and 1,5 metres in height. The other long barrows are 16-24 metres long and all have beautiful shapes.

The site has been prepared for visitors and is today inside a small fenced in area with sheep helping to keep the vegetation down. The barrows are easy to see since they are covered only with short grass and some birch trees. It is a beautiful example of a iron age barrow cemetery.
