Information about the location of Winter Tor Cist comes from Prehistoric Dartmoor Walks (PDW).
The PDW web page gives links to further information on Pastscape, Monument Number 444160, which says this is "a round cairn situated on (a dip in) the ridge between Higher Tor and Oke Tor, 250 metres south east of Winter Tor. The cairn survives as a 10 metre diameter mound standing up to 0.9 metres high. A number of edge set stones on the western side of the mound may indicate the presence a kerb which survives elsewhere as a buried feature. The mound material extends 1.4 metres beyond the outer edge of the kerb. A hollow in the centre of the cairn represents the site of a partial early excavation, which recovered a few fragments of burnt bone. Two large stones sitting within the central pit may be the remnants of a broken cist coverstone. Scheduled."
This cairn is also recorded as MDV6881 (Cairn with cist 240 metres south-east of Winter Tor), and scheduled as Historic England List Entry No. 1017873.
Note: Cairn and cist, nearby to the site of two new stone circles and a dolmen found by Alan Endacott in the area of Taw Marsh, northern Dartmoor. Full sitepages to be created when we have more information.
