Stonehenge was a precision-engineered monument used in the search for extra-terrestrial intelligence, according to Exeter archaeologist and Stonehenge expert Dennis Price.

The father-of-two, from Broadclyst, has undertaken years of research on the stone circle. Now, in a detailed investigation on his Eternal Idol Internet blog, he points to "many mistakes" that have been made interpreting the stones - casting doubt on theories that it was a calendar, a healing site or a temple.

Mr Price also suggests the Stonehenge bluestones - a mineral that, when freshly quarried, shows bright white specks against a dark background - could have inspired Sir Arthur C Clarke's famous monolith in 2001: A Space Odyssey. In the book, a character gazes into its depths and exclaims: "It's full of stars!"

The author was one of many astronomers who have taken an interest in Stonehenge.

The formation's long list of fans also includes Professor Gerald Hawkins, who studied it intensively in the 1960s and concluded that it was a Stone Age observatory.

Mr Price said: "Whether magical astrology or scientific astronomy was practised at Stonehenge, I believe these people were earnestly scanning the night skies for signs of intelligent life."

His theories gained support from Christopher J Corbally, a senior astronomer and vice-director of the Vatican Observatory in Arizona, who wrote: "I think you are correct in thinking those people who built Stonehenge would have pondered about life, and intelligent life, elsewhere."

Mr Price, who shot to prominence after finding a missing altar stone from Stonehenge, recently uncovered evidence suggesting he had found the Lost City of Apollo near the site.

Re: Was Stonehenge Built To Spot Aliens? by Anonymous on Wednesday, 27 October 2010
No it was not built to spot Aliens. According to Internet sources like Wikipedia and Who built stonehenge, it was used as burial ground. There is little or no direct evidence for the construction techniques used by the Stonehenge builders. Over the years, various authors have suggested that supernatural or anachronistic methods were used, usually asserting that the stones were impossible to move otherwise

My impression is that he doesn't mean 'aliens' as we use it. The above reading of the article seems a little sensational. The search for intelligence in the heavens he seems to be talking about is something more like an effort to communicate with the heavenly bodies themselves as intelligences, or to address greater beings or spirits who might have been seen as using the stars and other lights of the night as glyphs, that sort of thing. An effort to create a structure great enough to arrest the attention of whatever is out there.
