Volunteers to delve into Redcar's salty past

A time team will search for the salt of the earth when it delves into a Redcar farm's Iron Age past. Volunteers are poised to join the third annual archaeological dig at ancient Foxrush Farm, off Kirkleatham Lane reports ic Teesside.

And if past years are anything to go by, organisers think evidence of salt production may be uncovered this time.

So far the settlement - which may date from 2,000 years ago - has yielded mainly pottery, iron-making tools, animal bones and boundary fences.

But evidence of some sort of industry has also been found at a site first spotted through aerial photos and geophysical surveys in the 1990s.

The 2004 dig, organised by Redcar and Cleveland Council and Tees Archaeology, will last for two weeks from Tuesday. After that, local schoolchildren will be given the chance to explore the site and surrounding woodland.

Project director Rachel Grahame, from Tees Archaeology, said they were determined to uncover what type of industry was going on.

She said: "It's some sort of industry - they are making something because there are layers of different things built on top of each other.

"We hope to finish the investigation to find out exactly what and we'll be sending samples to scientists at Durham University.

"They might have been producing salt and trading it with other communities.

"It was just a normal, everyday farm but it's exciting because it's the only one in the area and we still want to know why they were down there, as the area itself is quite marshy."

About ten to 12 people are expected to work on site each day. To find out more about volunteering for the excavation, call 01429 523455.

School parties can book now for a morning or afternoon session after the site is officially opened on September 15 by Redcar and Cleveland Mayor, Cllr Madge Moses, and children from Lingdale Primary School.

For information on school tours ring Jo Fearey on 01642 444231.

Dig set to uncover Iron Age past

Archaeologists are beginning to dig into Teesside's Iron Age past at an excavation at a farm in Redcar.

The work at Foxrush Farm is being organised by Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council and Tees Archaeology.

It will last for two weeks before dozens of local schoolchildren will be given the chance to explore the site and surrounding woodland.

Any samples uncovered will be sent to scientists at the University of Durham to analyse.

Project director Rachel Grahame said of the area: "There is some sort of industrial area, but we don't know exactly what they're doing.

"It's some sort of industry, they're making something because there are layers and layers of different things built on top of each other.

"They might have been producing salt and trading it with other communities. If you were in the middle of North Yorkshire, there'd be nowhere to get salt, apart from someone on the coast."
