The results of English Heritage's Review of the National Monuments Record (NMR) are published today. The Review's recommendations include a major corporate commitment to providing more NMR information on line.

The Review of the NMR began with a public consultation in Autumn 2003. Almost 900 responses to this consultation were received, the authors of all of which will receive copies of the final document. The review's conclusions are published as Unlocking Heritage Information, which is available on request from English Heritage customer services on 0870 333 1181 or on the Internet here.

The recommendations have been formally endorsed by English Heritage's Commissioners, and a series of programmes aimed at delivering them within three years will be launched next spring, as part of English Heritage's next Corporate Plan.

The recommendations include:

vastly-improved access to NMR archives and information, on the world wide web;

a new and vigorous portfolio of digital services and products;

and a drive to develop new audiences and partnerships.

The review also covered the NMR's relationship with local historic environment records, and as a result of it English Heritage will work with these partners to deliver a 'Heritage Gateway', or portal to historic environment records in England. The NMR's role in the sector will be refocused to ensure standards continue to be developed and disseminated, interoperability between records is enhanced, and the capacity for local authorities and others to manage this information is enhanced.

To resource all these developments, 10-15% of the NMR's £2.8 million budget will be redirected towards the new initiatives and a new team will be charged with specific responsibility for driving the changes forward.

As a mark of these commitments, on 15 November the NMR also launches PastScape on the world wide web. PastScape contains summary information on every archaeological site in the National Monuments Record: around 400,000 sites, buildings, finds and excavations. It is the most complete account of England's archaeology so far available on the world wide web.

'The National Monuments Record makes a fundamental contribution to every aspect of the work of English Heritage', writes Neil Cossons, EH Chairman, in the Review. 'It is vital to our mission to understand, protect and enhance the historic environment.'

Cheers for posting this Vicky, they sent me a copy of the document that I've been reading tonight, indeed some of the nice colour pictures will be cut out to go on the wall of the bedroom nerve centre.

One surreal part is where the NMR say they think that people think they are under threat purely as they are running the consultation. They could well be right as the document is full of rather laboured efforts to show willing as a responsive, 'with it' organisation with many community and educational programmes cited, and a very fancy stand at the History in Action show with no one appearing to visit it :-)

My hunch is that things will go the way of Ofcom, with a grand unification of all the heritage bodies as part of the general Public Sector efficiency drive.

One good point is the gov proposal that local SMRs are to be made statutory on local councils (have I got this right?)

Now if they can just fix Pastscape on non Microsoft browsers... Not to mention the EH web site!
Andy
