The Skies Above Us Under Our Very Feet

Wolfgang Thiele writes of his "discovery of the first Wonder of the World between the Rhine and the Weser, Lippe Ruhr and Main.". What do you think of his theory?

In 1994, after more than 10 years of research, the hobby archaeologist Wolfgang Thiele successfully proved the existence of huge earth pictures over an area of thousands of acres in the middle of Europe. These pictures are a reflection of the starry sky on the earth: the skies above us under our very feet. This sensational discovery was the first of its kind anywhere in the world and will be published on October 8, 2003, and then presented to the press.

One year later Thiele approached Herbert Knorr, a historian, germanist and publicist, in order to publish his findings. Through their work together, the two were able to decipher the earth pictures down to the very last geometrical detail. With an almost fanatical attention to detail, they were also able to make further exciting discoveries and uncover bit by bit a ….. a wonder from the neolithic period.

It all began with a complete heathen zodiac in the vault of an old church. This church, which is unique in Europe, stands on the very spot where the first Christian chapel in the area was built. The place, Wormbach in the Sauerland, was, in the distant past, also an important heathen ceremonial ground. The first Saxon mission was to found these earth pictures and thus find a way back to the neolithic age. This was at the time of the christianization by Carl the Great which led to the destruction of the ancient heathen grounds and the church-building and migration in the area. The intensive work on the omnipresent phenomenon of the “continuity of Cult” played a central role in the discovery of this reflected sky.

At the very core of the project are the 258 Churches, Chapels and Convents in the region, which reflect the most important part of the northern starry sky, a total of seventeen constellations which match up identically.

These earth pictures were formed, presumably unwittingly, by the Christians of the first millenium as they built their churches on or near the ancient heathen sacred grounds. However it is not any old churches which reflect the starry sky. The churches have been proved to be the oldest in the area. This is a fascinating result as well as a research criteria!

Moreover, it is not just any old stars which are represented on the ground. It is stars with a brightness of less than 6mag (visible both then and now) including all the stars which make up the seventeen constellations.

In order to accurately date and position the reflection on the ground, it was necessary to use both modern astronomy and ancient knowledge of the skies. This has been recorded in numerous myths, sayings, reports and monuments from pre-historic times from all over the world. Thus, our project refers to such places and wonders as New Grange and Stonehenge, the pyramids of Egypt and Cambodia amongst other constructions around the globe which were planned according to the heavens. The text has also managed to decipher for the first time, the astronomical data of the great myths by proving the link between them and the ranges of the discovered system. After checking using modern astronomical and mathematical methods, we were able to come to the main discovery: that the sky-on-earth reflects the most important period of the heavens, the precession cycle which lasts for about 25 920 years. It was a golden era and reveals the knowledge the neolithic people had about the heavens.

The earth pictures were excavated and converted using scientifically proven neolithic methods and then evaluated though exact measurements. We were able to confirm the positions of the observational peak (where the model will stand), the poles and the theoretical point of the celestial pole, as well as the important north-south axis (axis mundi) and the east-west axis (the true horizon) of the system. This meant we were able to correctly predict the positions of important places using the facts already discovered and the theory that goes with it.

The reflected sky was discovered on the grounds of the ancient saxons, the ancient province of Westfalia, which makes up the present day Ruhr valley, Hellweg region and the Sauerland. Places where the Franks, their missionaries and finally Carl the Great carried out their (in some cases violent) conversions. The discovery also leads us into Hessen and the oldest church in Weilburg (favourite retreat of the first german King, Konrad I) and finally to the cathedral in Mainz, the headquarters of the famous Bonifatius and the frankish missionaries.

The old place names of the star patterns often reveal their previous role. This opens up a fascinating insight into the world of language, which previously wasn’t able to place the meaning of such names as “pearly gates”, “in the heavens” or “bridge to the garden of heaven”. What makes this discovery even more fascinating is that bit by bit, the jigsaw forms a picture which wasn’t even known of before we started putting the pieces together. The ancient cultures of the British Isles, Peru, Cambodia, Egypt all play an important part in the book but what we found on the grounds of ancient Westfalia is even more important.

The work traces the long and exciting path that Wolfgang Thiele, at first alone then later with Herbert Knorr, took for many years. Their search was scientific detective work, littered with difficulties, setbacks and red herrings but also took many a surprising turn. The pieces of the jigsaw have all been put together in due course to show the results and how everything came to be. The story is almost archaeological-astronomical crime-fiction.

This incredible legacy left to us by our fore-fathers has the hallmarks of a new Wonder of the World. In fact, as the earth pictures date back to 3000 BC it can be taken as the very first Wonder of the World, the pyramids in Egypt date back to about 2500 BC. Whatever the case, this discovery will revolutionise ancient history.

This sky-on-earth is fascinating not only because of its size but also its placing, not only because of its phenomenal precision but also how it combines mathematics and astronomy. At the same time we were able to win insights into life 5000 years ago, something historians hadn’t dare dream about until now. The results of the research speak for themselves. They are simple and clear, which is how it should be.
