The book is about connections: connections between people and the land, between people and their forebears, and between people and the rest of the universe. A deep and practical spirituality flows through the pages, informed by ideas that many readers will recognise as important. The author spent a significant part of his youth in the Scottish Highlands - where much of the story takes place - and subsequently carried out a great deal of research in order to produce a believable milieu for a period about which we know very little. Readers with a special interest in this period, and in this type of artifact of the land, will particularly appreciate the book.
And, as with this author's previous novel, there remains the feeling that there is more to the story than first meets the eye.
