The history of gambling is a very long one. If we look back to the earliest human civilizations, we will find examples of people playing primitive games using elements like dice. It is almost as if we are hardwired to be attracted to these games of chance. Of course, the ways in which we play them now are a lot different, owing to the march of technology.Games that involve gambling have undergone a steady evolution, with online gambling fuelled by technology being one of the key steps along the road. That is the main way in which people play the likes of poker these days and it has revived and increased interest in that classic card game.

That was the year in which many fans of the game witnessed an amateur player and accountant by the name of Chris Moneymaker walk away with the top prize at the World Series of Poker tournament.It sent shockwaves through the industry and sparked a massive rise in the levels of interest in poker tournaments. In covering the $2,500,000 triumph of Moneymaker, the media emphasized the fact that he had gained entry to the tournament by winning a satellite one that was held online.
The result was that many of the people who sought to emulate his story went to online providers in search of tournaments to enter. This period saw a rise in professional internet poker players, but then there was a setback for the industry.
A piece of legislation called the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act was passed in the US during 2006. That made online poker illegal there and the US government targeted many of the original poker sites in subsequent years.
