A multi-million pound public inquiry into the creation of a proposed national park for the South Downs openied today. The 100 miles of rolling chalk hills extend across more than 400,000 acres from Eastbourne in East Sussex to Winchester in Hampshire and includes the well-known Cissbury Ring and Chanctonbury Ring.

Attempts have been made for more than 100 years to obtain national park status to protect the area.

The inquiry, in Worthing, West Sussex, could last up to a year, costing the tax payer at least £800 a day.

If approved, national park status will give the area the same protection as places like the Peak District and the Lake District, and could be in place by 2006.

The park has the backing of the Countryside Agency, which has undertaken a series of consultations with the public and local authorities.

It is supported by conservation groups, and argues it is the best way of guaranteeing that the beauty of the South Downs is preserved and protected from inappropriate development.

The scheme also has its objectors, which include several local councils and landowning and farming groups.

Making the area a National Park might seem like a good idea to a lot of people but for me it would ruin access to the area, and I am not the only person in this area to think this way. No damage has been done to the site as it is and it is such a loved location that I seriously dont think things need to change at all. Let us wander freely as we do at the moment.

I've got to do a synoptic Geography A-Level paper on the South Downs National Park this summer. Is this anything around that could help me along the lines of the whether the South Downs should be designated as a National Park or not? Is the proposed Arundle bypass going to have a further or lesser impact on the area?

    Hiya, I'm doin the paper this summer too. I found it helpful to look up other examples of Bypasses - see what the issues involved were, and see if you can apply them to Arundel. Also, research the type of land the bypass is gonna be built on (figure 3) and what impact thats likely to have. Look at the cost of the bypass not just in monetary terms but in the impact on ancient woodlands, water meadows, etc. I found this quote:

    'Impact of Arundel Bypass- The model was used to assess the impact of theArundel bypass on traffic flows in Worthing. The model indicated that traffic flows on the Arundel road would be increased by 5% and Sompting Way by 2%. Thus the completion of the Arundel bypass had a small impact on flows on the A27. Much of this additional traffic has diverted from the A259 and A272'
