Peak District National Park says no to one of the Stanton Moor Quarries

A controversial proposal to extend workings at New Pilhough quarry, on the edge of Stanton Moor, in the Peak District, was today rejected by the National Park Authority.

In January the Planning Committee had conditionally agreed to planning permission in return for concessions that would protect the most sensitive parts of the moor and minimise the impact on local communities but after hearing comments from objectors and the applicants and discussing the many issues involved, committee members finally decided to turn down the application because it went against National Park policies.

Councillor John Bull, Chair of the Committee, said, "The Authority's main purpose is to conserve and enhance the National Park but the powers we have are limited. We have to balance that purpose against other legal rights, such as those held by the quarrying companies. That can leave us with very difficult decisions."

He explained that on Stanton Moor, an area of outstanding archaeological and landscape importance, quarrying consents already existed. In taking the decision not to allow the extension of New Pilhough it was possible that these would now be exploited with the risk of causing damage to the moor.

Councillor Bull said, "We had tried to find a compromise, putting strict controls on the new proposals in return for winning concessions that would protect the most sensitive parts of the moor. In the final analysis members decided that our policy of not allowing new quarries should take precedence."
