'Accessing Scotland's Past' (ASP) is a pilot project underway at the Royal Commission on Ancient and Historical Monuments of Scotland (RCAHMS).

RCAHMS records and interprets the rich variety of sites and monuments and buildings which together make up Scotland's built heritage. The organisation also works to promote a greater appreciation of this resource, through the National Monuments Record of Scotland, a national collection of material which relates to the archaeology and architecture of Scotland.

Supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund, ASP is currently running as a 'proof of concept' for one year in a limited geographical area. The target areas chosen are the Cairngorms, in Aberdeenshire and Moray, and the Merse, in the Scottish Borders. The project is being run in partnership with the local authority archaeologists for Moray, Aberdeenshire Council and Scottish Borders Council.

I visited Auldearn on 26/10/05 and can confirm above comments. On the Moyness Road there is a new driveway, at the entrance to which is a large stone (?part of stone row) that is now built into a brand new drystone wall that detracts greatly from the stone's original setting.

I couldn't find any other stones belonging to the row because of dense undergrowth.

The stone circle (three stones) can be seen from the pathway at the front of a private residence, or from the field at the rear.

Having just returned from Nairnshire and Moray I must say that I found, in some instances, that 'accessing Scotland's past' can be very difficult indeed - circles of standing stones, like those at Auldearn and the nearby Templestones, in private gardens and blocked to the public. Just south of Auldearn an ancient motte is being bulldozed flat courtesy of Auldearn Quarries PLC, and between the motte and the Auldearn circle (which is in the garden of a private lodge house) a cairn and stone row is buried in tangled undergrowth and would need a machete to clear it.
This motte and cairn/row lie in the 2 miles or so between the Moyness circle and that in Audearn and seem to be part of the same complex, hugely ignored and partially destroyed. When I get my films developed I intend to to do a full illustrated article about being unable to, in this instance, 'access Scotland's past.'
