DigsVolunteers are needed to dig up the past at a major excavation on Teesside. Archaeology experts are appealing for local people to help them to undertake the major excavation at Hartlepool's Headland.Tees Archaeology is behind the project, which starts on Monday and runs weekdays until October 18. The dig is part of the Community Archaeology initiative and funded by the North Hartlepool Partnership's Single Regeneration Budget programme.
Mark Simmons, the community archaeologist for the Headland, said it is a great opportunity for local people to be involved first-hand in real archaeological work.
He said: "The excavation will be investigating a number of features discovered during a previous dig on the Town Moor eight years ago. We hope to open three trenches during the excavation.
"The first will investigate the remains of a large ditch currently believed to date from the English Civil War. Trench two is nearby while trench three is a mysterious circular feature."
He said a specialist team of experienced diggers has been assembled to assist and train local volunteers. No experience is necessary but people must be over 18 and be reasonably fit.
There are only a limited number of places so priority will be given to people who live or work on the Headland.
