This is the stuff of romance, but it's quite true - three caving friends entered an unknown cavern in the Ardeche in southern France and found cave paintings 15,000 years older than those at Lascaux. Dated to 30,000 years before the present, these astonishing paintings sensitively portray the animals of Early Upper Palaeolithic Europe.

Here are the most wonderful horses (see cover photo) painted with such incredible skill and love. Just look at the faces of those horses and wonder! I particularly like the cave lions (see here) – they have such a power of brooding strength and anyone who has read Jean Auel’s “Earth’s Children” books will recognise them at once. Then there are bison, rhinoceros, ibex, aurochs, deer, mammoth and a superbly observed cave bear! These paintings that are so much older than those at Lascaux are in no way inferior to them. Without taking anything away from cave paintings elsewhere, it could be argued that these are superior – certainly in the accuracy of the animal portraits and the sensitivity of expression.

I am just crazy about the prehistoric sites and we have visited quite a few in France. But when it comes to paintings such as those at CHAUVET CAVE, I wonder if this is all true. When you think about these people who are supposed to have painted these horses, they were under pressure all the time, not knowing if they would survive another day... not getting much sleep I suppose and fighting for a living. How could these disturbed populations make painting so nice, so colorful, so lively and so beautiful comparable to the contempory works. . . . . . .I wonder . . . .

Hello,

There are some good websites in French and also in English about the Chauvet caves. I liked the one that lets you wander through the caves and look at the pictures in detail. It lets you decide what to view and in which order.
Unfortunately people will never be able to visit the caves, but this might be a good thing for the cave and its fascinating paintings.
I would like to have the book though...
