Beltane at Thornborough Henge -Celebrate the ancient festival of Beltane at one of Britain's most important prehistoric sacred sites on Sunday May 1st 2005. Ceremony begins at 1.00 pm in the central Henge. Everyone welcome!

Following the success of last years Beltane ceremony at Thornborough Henge we have been given permission to do it all over again. Special reference was made to the fact that last year we left absolutely no litter behind, so well done everybody.

In 2004 I asked people to dress-up for the event, and top prize had to go to the guy who came as a Druidic Knight in full battle dress: This year, can
anyone top that? My additional request is for anyone who is noisily musical to bring their drums, pipes, didgeridoos or spoons to the event.

Last years ceremony had a distinctly bovine theme, featuring as it did, a pantomime cow being chased between two fires (like what they used to do with real cows). This year, following the recent discovery of the ritual burial of four horses near to Thornborough Henge (dating from Celtic times) the ceremony will have a more equestrian (that's a posh word for 'horsey') theme.

We are starting a little bit earlier this year, so after the ceremony if anybody wants to do their own thing, feel free: Whatever you think should go on in a henge at Beltane (as long as it doesn't involve digging holes). I want Beltane at Thornborough to be an event, like last year, where people come to make something happen, not just to watch something happen. Mission accomplished - this was a truly fantastic weekend of Beltane fun. My hands are still throbbing from 20+ hours of djembe playing. Just for the record you can fit at least 8 green men in one henge. So many beautiful and open people all in one place. Many magical connections were made and many new friendships were formed. So thank you megalithic for connecting me to this event and for allowing me to rant on about it. Also many thanks to Oliver for his hard work in organising this event - he has aged by about 20 years in the last 3 months!!
Roll on the Solstice, the G8 cycle caravan and the start of the Summer.
Many more drums to play . . .

BIG FAT HAIRY DRUMS - OR IS THAT BIG FAT HAIRY DRUMMERS? Either way get yourself to Yorkshire this Beltane for some magical pagan fun. Costumes essential (How many green men can you fit in one henge?).

Possible transport available from Derbyshire/Leicester/Stoke/Northampton.

LET'S SHOW TARMAC WHY THE HENGES AND THEIR SACRED LANDSCAPE ARE SO SPECIAL TO US AND WHY THEY MUST NOT TOUCH THEM IN ANY WAY.

COME ON - GET YOUR DJEMBES OUT FOR THE HENGES !!!!

Count me in. Beltane is the perfect time for celebration. I shall bring as many drummers as I can find (which may be quite a few). You will hear us coming . . .
Let's show TARMAC why we want to keep the henges as they are - so we can use them as they have been used for thousands of years - a meeting place - a place of celebration and a place of thanks.
I find it very comforting to know that our ancient sites all over Britain are still being used for some of the purposes they were created for. I regularly arrange drumming sessions up on Stanton Moor at the Nine Ladies which are always special and the stones always make us feel very welcome. Keep them alive !!
The whole concept of visiting and using ancient sites without causing any damage or litter is very important. I spend a lot of time clearing up at the Ladies as almost every other visitor feels compelled to leave litter. Their time will come . . .
