<< News >> Archaeological dig uncovers relics from Bronze Age to 19th century

Submitted by PaulM on Wednesday, 09 March 2005  Page Views: 1228

Neolithic and Bronze AgeArchaeologists have unearthed evidence of medieval life – including fragments of pottery and animal bones – at an excavation near Huntingdon. The finds have been discovered by archaeologists from the Archaeological Field Unit of Cambridgeshire County Council, who are working in conjunction with Clegg's Ltd on behalf of the County Council at Walden House on George Street.

The excavations have unearthed archaeology which spans an enormous period of time, from the Bronze Age to the 19th century, but the bulk of the remains are from the 12th to 14th centuries.

Archaeologists found many large pits that may have been dug to extract sand and gravel, as well as a large oven and

evidence of small scale metal working. A complex of square timber and brick lined pits

used for tanning leather in the 19th century are an interesting relic of Huntingdon's more recent history.

Archaeological Field Unit Project Officer Rachel Clarke said: "This has been a rare opportunity to study the development of one part of Huntingdon from medieval to modern times. We are very pleased to be able to share our discoveries with visitors to the excavation on Saturday March 12 and to Cromwell Museum until mid April."

Guided tours of the site will be held every hour on Saturday between 10 am and 2pm.

People wishing to join the tours should meet at the Cromwell Museum 10 minutes before tours begin. Finds from the excavation can be seen at the Cromwell Museum until mid April. The Cromwell Museum can be found in Grammar School Walk, off the High Street in Huntingdon.
