Maen Llia
Maen Llia submitted by Johnny : Maen Llia Standing Stone (Powys, SN 924 193) "Llia’s Stone" is an elegant and imposing standing stone which is impressively situated in a remote position at the top of the Llia valley, along which it points directly north to south. It is a massive slab of a stone 3.8 metres in height, 2.8 metres across but only 0.9 metres thick and dominates the scenery in the austere moorland of Fforest Faw... (Vote or comment on this photo)
Maen Llia a large standing stone north of the village of Ystradfellte, Powys in South Wales has recently been vandalised. The words "Ban Blair" have been painted in large letters on one side of the monument in green paint and "F**k Blair" on the other side. It is suspected that supporters of the countryside alliance have used the monument to make a political point.

Maen Llia has been vandalised again!
This is the latest news in the Daily Mail online:

Defaced by a smiley face! Vandals target ancient monolith which is believed to be as old as Stonehenge
Neolithic stone at Brecon Beacons National Park in Wales was defaced
The Maen Llia standing stone was erected between 2,500 and 1,800 BC
Iconic 12ft tall structure has stood since then undamaged - until now

Park authority: 'Criminal acts like this can cause irreversible damage'

These BRAINLESS IDIOTS should get a life.
Why do we humans keep ruining our own quality of life, as though it means nothing. These stones were placed for a reason, and if we don't know the reason why, then we should still have respect for them. NOT DEFACE THEM.
I JUST DON'T KNOW WHEN THIS SORT OF THING WILL STOP.

I read 'BAN' as 'BAW' (shit, dung). A despicable outrage.

From Peter Dorling National Park Archaeologist:

I can confirm that the reported vandalism did take place. Fortunately
the letters were daubed in sheep marking fluid rather than spray paint.

We have got most of it off using a mild detergent and scrubbing brushes,
but the nature of the stone makes it difficult to clean completely. We
hope that natural process will get rid of the rest. We also left some
where lichen would have been damaged by scrubbing.

I can confirm this story. The letters were sprayed in sheep marker fluid. Brecon Beacons National Park staff have removed most of the fluid using mild detergent and scrubbing brushes. However, due to the nature of the stone, and the need to avoid damaging lichen some fluid still remains. Hopefully time and Welsh weather will remove the rest.

The story is true. I was up there last Friday and was
met by this terrible sight. The green letters are
quite big and fills out most of the two sides. It
looks awful. I can't believe it would be organized
campaigners as the dark green writing is not that
visible from the road.
Maen Madoc is untouched.

Cheers
Ioann
