DigsCountry: Iran Discovery of the remains of an old construction in Abu-Fondova historical hill also led to the discovery of a family tomb dating back to the New Elamite period (around 750 BC).

The discovery was made by a team of archeologists from the Archeology Research Center of Iran’s Cultural Heritage and Tourism Organization, reports CHN."

“Remains of the brick ceiling of a tomb belonging to the New Elamite Period were discovered in northern parts of Abu-Fondova historical hill. There are also remains of some graves in this tomb which have been destroyed over time,“ said Leili Niakan, head of the archeological team in Abu-Fondova.

The bricks used in the construction of the ceiling are 31x32x5 centimeters and the current height of the remaining ceiling is 80 centimeters. The tomb itself is 1.13 meters in width and 2.26 meters in height. "

According to Niakan, six human skulls have been unearthed from the tomb. “The skeletons were scattered. This tomb dates back to some 2700 years ago.“

The discovered fragmented bones and skulls have been transferred to Haft Tepe Museum. Archeological excavations in Abu-Fondova historical site in Susian Plain, southwestern Iran, started last week by a joint team of archeologists from Iran’s cultural Heritage and Tourism Organization and the Oriental Institute of University of Chicago under the supervision of Leili Niakan and Abbas Alizadeh.

Iran’s most intact jar burial, which dates back to the Elamite era, was transferred to the Haft-Tappeh Museum last week.

Containing a skeleton in fetal position, the jar was discovered during the latest excavation carried out several months ago at Haft-Tappeh, a major Elamite site near Susa in Khuzestan Province, the Persian service of CHN reported on Tuesday.

“This is the first time such an intact jar burial has been unearthed,” director of the Restoration Department of the Haft-Tappeh and Chogha Zanbil Center Kazem Borhani said.

“Urgent actions were taken to preserve the artefact in situ in order to safely transfer it to the centre for restoration,” he stated.

A piece of the jar has been removed to enable visitors to see the skeleton inside it, Borhani explained.

An anthropologist has begun a series of studies to determine the gender of the skeleton, which is believed to date back to the Middle Elamite period (c. 1500-1100 BCE).

Archaeologists have discovered a goat statuette and a bas-relief of a lizard buried with the skeleton of a woman in the cemetery of the Narges Tappeh ancient site near Gorgan, Golestan Province, the Persian service of CHN reported.

“The goat statuette was located under the left arm of the woman, who was buried in a squatting position. The bas-relief of the lizard has been carved on the handle of a stick-like artifact, the likes of which have never been seen at any ancient Iranian site. The skeleton dates back to the first millennium BC,” archaeological team director Qorban-Ali Abbasi explained.

A bird has been depicted on the curved horns of the goat and a number of other artifacts, such as a necklace, earrings, a hairpin, and several bracelets connected to a ring worn by the woman, have been found in her grave.

The archaeologists also discovered a six-pronged relic made of tar and a stone spindle beside the skeleton.

The excavations are being carried out to save Narges Tappeh, which is located near the runway of an airport currently under construction in Gorgan.

Archaeologists have recently discovered fragments of pottery containing corn and lentil, which has provided important information on the diet of the inhabitants of Narges Tappeh in ancient times.

Covering an area of about 17,000 square meters, Narges Tappeh contains traces of architecture, pottery, and a dozen other monuments and artifacts, some dating back to about 5000 BC.

Archaeologists have also discovered a cemetery, a brick castle, and many skeletons from the early Islamic era.
