Fort Ancient | Hillfort | United States | Great Lakes Midwest | Visited | 21st Aug 2015 | 3 | 4 | 5 | Fort Ancient takes some effort to find, but once inside the gates, the walls that go on for miles and which can be seen from the roadside are impressive. The best time to see it would be when the foliage and summer growth are not so dense. From the car, there is not much to see, but the "overlooks... Read More |

Newark Earthworks - Octagon | Misc. Earthwork | United States | Great Lakes Midwest | Visited | 21st Aug 2015 | 4 | 3 | 4 | Viewing the Octagon is best done when the golf course that engulfed it has it's "open house" and visitors are invited to walk the course without fear of golf balls whizzing passed. The earthwork is so huge that pictures from the viewing platform really don't do it justice.
Hopewell Culture National Historic Site | Misc. Earthwork | United States | Great Lakes Midwest | Visited | 21st Aug 2015 | 4 | 5 | 5 | The National Park Service has done an excellent job of preserving and expanding the site since the last time I visited there in 1994. I don't remember the enclosing walls having been visible at that time due to shrubs and foliage. The visitors is very good and has an excellent film which talks abo... Read More |

Serpent Mound, Ohio | Artificial Mound | United States | Great Lakes Midwest | Visited | 21st Aug 2015 | 4 | 5 | 5 | I visited this site back in 1993 or so. It is perhaps in better shape now than it was then. One addition to that time are markers for astronomical alignments that are based on the coils of the snake. Still very peaceful and worth the view.
Seip Mound | Artificial Mound | United States | Great Lakes Midwest | Visited | 20th Aug 2015 | 4 | 4 | 4 | The site is in much better shape than my first visit back in 1994, and now has a longer trail that moves through the entire complex down toward the Paint River. Not a lot is left undisturbed, but the mound has been rebuilt after a long ago excavation. There was a second mound that was not rebuilt.... Read More |

Newark Earthworks - Great Circle | Misc. Earthwork | United States | Great Lakes Midwest | Visited | 20th Aug 2015 | 4 | 5 | 5 | I loved this place, although I suspect that visiting when the foliage is not so thick might help with seeing the definition of the ditch and bank. Although it is built a minimum of 1000 years after some of the ancient sites in the UK, its walls and deep ditch are reminiscent of the classic ditch an... Read More |

Grave Creek Mound | Artificial Mound | United States | Mid Atlantic | Visited | 21st Aug 2015 | 3 | 4 | 5 | The mound is impressive by any standards and a good introduction to the ancient sites further west and south. |
