Description
Another angle on the menhir at the Oxenham Arms, pictured on 5th Sept (07). I found it in the small dining room - off the left of the passage - behind the front bar.
It props up a beam but is otherwise free-standing.
Makes me wonder if there are two in this pub, as I didn't venture into the bar to check if there was one inlaid into the wall.

I can't recall where I have this info in my head from, so it may be wrong, but I believe that this stone was put here in Victorian times as a "feature". Where the original stone came from is unknown. Perhaps it was once a part of the long lost Sticklepath stone circle.

That's interesting Martyn, it certainly looks like an important ancient stone. Wouldn't it be great if it WAS from the missing Sticklepath circle (hadn't heard of that one!)

this is NOT a photograph of the Oxhenham Arms famous menhir , this one is a different stone used as a pillar in an other room of the pub . the Menhir itself is situatedc in an other room and partily included in the wall . mesurment with my pendular confirmed that this stone , here , is a normal building element wich has no vibration , the real menhir , has got an enormous vibrating effect and anyone can feel the warm of the mineral

Fair enough. It could be a menhir from another site on Dartmoor, though? People have always taken stones off the moor if it suits their purpose.

The big stone is in the snug - lots of information on sign nowadays and you can sit right next to it. Is estimated to be 25 feet if include underground part has been excavated and dowsed. The other stone was said to be Roman ?
