Lord Stones Cairn Circle, Three Lords’ Stone, RB1 & RB2 by johndhunter on Monday, 20 May 2019
(User Info | Send a Message)
I am not quite sure in what context the term Cairn Circle is being used in the site name, I presume it is referring to the couple of large kerb stones visible at the round barrow at NZ 52364 02986, this is RB1 in the uploaded sketch map. One of these stones on the north west perimeter has been utilised as a boundary stone and is known as the Three Lords’ Stone. Also in the site description it says there are a couple of standing stones in the area, I myself am not aware of any though there are some large boundary stones. What I do know is in the area I have shown on the uploaded sketch map.

RB1 & RB2 on the uploaded sketch map are round barrows at NZ 52364 02986 and NZ 52379 03002 respectively they are Historic England List Entry Number 1008855 which tells us that RB2 is a well defined earth and stone mound standing 0.7m high. It is round in shape and is 15m in diameter. Three large stones are exposed on the northern side of the mound. (I could not see any – April 2019) It also tells us that RB1 has a large well defined mound standing 0.75m high. It is round in shape and is 12.5m in diameter. A number of large kerb stones surrounding the mound are visible. One of these, the Three Lords' Stone, has a number of cup marks, of prehistoric date, incised upon it. Pastscape also has information on these two barrows at Monument No.27476. Additional information provided by Pastscape tells us that there are 11 kerb stones around the perimeter of RB1 (is this the cairn circle referred to in the site name?). The source of this information was the Field Investigators comment in 1962. When I visited in 2019 I could only see 2 obvious large ones, though there are others, not so large and now overgrown.

A regards the Three Lords’ Stone, the kerb stone utilised as a boundary stone, it is so named after the three Lords whose estate boundaries met at the stone, they were Lord Marwood of Busby Hall, Lord Aislesby who had land to the south in Scugdale and Lord Duncombe of Helmsley.

Further information on Lord Stones Cairn Circle - RB3, RB4, Modern Stone Circle by johndhunter on Monday, 20 May 2019
(User Info | Send a Message)
RB3 – on the uploaded sketch is a round barrow at NZ 52408 03134, this is Historic England List Entry Number 1008854 which tells us that it is a well defined earth and stone mound standing 0.5m high. It is round in shape and is 10m in diameter. Also it tells us that on the top of the mound two large stones (actually there are three) lie exposed. These are covered in grooves and hollows, but these are considered to be the product of natural erosion rather than artificial carvings. Pastscape also has information on this barrow at Monument No.27479 and further tells us that the three recumbent boulders on top of the mound possibly formed a central cist now exposed.

RB4 – on the uploaded sketch is a round barrow at NZ 52148 03170, it is in a very prominent position with extensive all round views overlooking the Tees Plain. It is is Historic England List Entry Number 1008856 which tells us that it is a well defined earth and stone mound standing 1.2m high. It is round in shape and is 21m in diameter. Pastscape also has information on this barrow at Monument No.27482 though its measurements differ to Historic Englands in that it describes the barrow as being 18m in diameter and 1m high.

Modern Stone Circle – on the uploaded sketch map at NZ 52533 03268 is a very modern stone circle, built about 2013. It is more of a semi circle comprising of five stones. It has its own site page which can be viewed HERE

Hall Cliff Stone shown on the sketch map is a large boundary stone at NZ 52473 03234 and has its own site page which can be viewed HERE

Stone - The stone shown on the sketch map near RB1 & RB2 is now in a fenced off area with a young wood growing in front of it slowly obscuring it. Its grid reference will be about NZ 52403 03008. This large stone does not show up on old OS maps, consequently I am sceptical of its origins.

Sorry John, Mea Culpa.
I don't know what happened there either, I just copied your post straight into the sitepage, then deleted your comment.

Yes, please, if you could submit it again that would be great. Possibly split it into two separate comments?
The reason for asking for two is that it was truncated at the word 'barrow' in the last sentence and the active link to 'read more of this post' was a 404, so I (wrongly) assumed the missing info was a pastscape link.
I'll make sure it's correct.

Hello, I think this extended information (which is excellent by the way) is best kept in the 'comment' section. This is the same as 'Add a description' in any case. Putting it on the main page pushes the photos too far down. Thanks

My original comment since deleted was that a comment be made in the description referring to the fact that I had provided further information in the comments section so that it wasn't missed .

However since the sketch map I uploaded has now been placed as the main picture next to the description I am of the view that if my comment (keeping the layout the same with line breaks) was placed in the description you can than refer what you are reading to the sketch map
