An old estate boundary stone at Oakdale Head just to the south of Square Corner, beside the Cleveland Way in North Yorkshire. One time fallen but it would appear it has been re-erected about 30m north of its correct location. Probably 19th century but something of an enigma - read on to find our more.

Stanhope White in his 1987 publication ‘ Standing Stones & Earthworks on the North Yorkshire Moors’ page 43 describes finding this stone lying in the heather with the inscription down the shaft ‘Cray Hall Stone’, close to the Cleveland Way at SE 480956. He goes on to say there is no such name in the vicinity and letters in the local press and a search by the county librarian at Northallerton failed to find any place with this name. He goes on to say that the stone has recently been erected where he found it, which is presumably where it is today, SE 47978 95674 (my gps)

Looking at the 1854 OS map which can be viewed HERE it shows three stones in close proximity on the boundary line at Oakdale Head, one of which is named as the Grey Hall Stone. Later OS maps only show two stones, these are actually at SE 47992 95637 and SE 47990 95630, so presumably its correct location should be in close proximity to these two stones. It would appear either the mason or the OS 1854 cartographer made a simple error in the name, either way it has simply been re erected in the wrong place, slightly to the north and west of where it should be. It is of similar height and appearance to some of the other well masoned stones on the actual boundary lines in this general area such as the NELSON STONE and the FABER’S STONE. It also has the letter D midway up its western face also similar to other boundary stones on the nearby line string such as ROBINSONS CROSS.

Note: To add confusion the NYMNP ‘HER’ map names this stone the ‘Gray Hall Stone’ and describes it as an Inscribed Stone rather than a Boundary Stone, presumably because it is no longer on the boundary, it is monument number 5562. Also on their map the stone is shown at SE 47978 95651 which is closer to the boundary line than it actually is. As for it is age its described as a very wide ranging Post Mediaeval.

As the stone is close to the Cleveland Way you can get a good view of it on Google Earth Street View.

The track on the left whilst now part of the Cleveland Way is a very ancient route and was a major trade artery in prehistoric times, with round and long barrows along its route evidence of this. In mediaeval times it was known as the ‘Regalis Via’ (Kings Way) and laterally Hambleton Street or more com... (Vote or comment on this photo)

The westerly face of the stone on the right, though in shadow has the letter ‘D’ engraved upon it, towards the middle. This is similar to some of the stones on the nearby boundary line string. The fence on the left in the middle of the image follows the boundary line. It doglegs towards ...
