Nelson Stone (Swainby Shooting House)
Nelson Stone (Swainby Shooting House) submitted by histon : The Nelson Stone - looking southerly - just a 2023 update in the summer. (Vote or comment on this photo)
The Nelson Stone marks the boundaries of Whorlton, Osmotherley and Snilesworth and is located near Swainby Shooting House. Originally a large natural stone it was complemented in the 18C by a well masoned stone mounted next to it.

When I first visited in May 2012 this stone was no longer mounted in the ground and was propped up by the natural stone. It has its name Nelson Stone engraved on one side and on the top of the two adjacent sides the letters *A on one side and M on the other. Other boundary stones which run easterly from the Nelson Stone also have ‘A’ and ‘M’ engraved upon them. The ‘M’ stands for Manners the family name of the Duke of Rutland who owned Helmsley Castle for about ten generations, as regards the ‘A’ I do not know what it stands for.

Visiting this location again in July 2014 the well masoned stone seemed to have disappeared and only the large natural stone remained. However an image on the TRIGPOINTINGUK website which can be viewed HERE dated January 2017 shows this stone lying flat in the quarry pond close by. It was probably submerged when I visited in 2014 and that is why I did not see it, as far as I am aware it is still there.

* Note: Various sources on the internet say that it has an ‘M’ and an ‘O’ (for Osmotherley) engraved on it, this is incorrect, the letters are ‘M’ and ‘A’. However the large natural stone, the original Nelson Stone seems to have a small ‘O’ carved on it, though it looks rough and ready.

According to this OUT AND ABOUT blog the ‘A’ carved onto the C19 stone stands for the Marquis of Ailsbury (Marquess of Ailesbury).

Admin - Can we put an update in the description stating that the 18C well masoned stone has now been retrieved from the quarry pond and re-erected next to the original natural stone. This will have been in the latter half of 2019 as per Anonymous (John Severs) in the comments section.

Points to Ponder: Pastscape Monument 55670 lists a standing stone probably from the bronze age at SE 495980, under the sub heading “More Information and Sources” it is named as the ‘Old Howe Stone’ The six figure grid reference for the Nelson Stone is SE 496981 so it may or may not be the same stone. However old OS maps only show the Nelson Stone. I suspect an error in the Pastscape documentation and probably an incorrect grid reference has been given for the ‘Old Howe Stone’ wherever that may be.

According to the ‘Out and About’ blog HERE the Nelson Stone’s name is derived from the mediaeval name Nelehou** and quotes the source of this information as Bill Cowley’s book ‘Snilesworth’

In R.H.Hayes 1988 book - Old Roads and Pannierways in North East Yorkshire page 63 he quotes some extracts from medieval charters relating to roads. One of these extracts relates to the Boundaries of Whorlton & Snilesworth as follows “as the water falls from Neleshou on both sides of Harthou, and then as the water divides to Pundcalhou, and as it falls to the Red Road (Rubera via)” The extract is in fact referring to Howes (barrows) eg. Neles Howe, Hart Howe and Pundcal Howe though there are none in this area named as such today. Hayes surmises that the howes mentioned could be in the vicinity of Prod Howe, which he says is on the boundary at SE 528893* or Pin Howe just north of the boundary .

* This grid ref is well out, it should be SE 527983 and Prod Howe itself in this instance is the name of a boundary stone, its actual grid ref is SE52704 98277. Whether its actually on a howe or not I could not say but both Pastscape and Historic England do not show any barrows at this location. However looking at some photos I took in 2014 it does appear to be on a mound with other stones scattered around it, though some of the stones appear to be too linear in shape to be natural. Anyway by the same sort of reckoning why Pin Howe, why not in the vicinity of the Nelson Stone (Neleshou) (Neles Howe) which is on the actual boundary.

** The blog says Cowley spells it Nelehou, Hayes spells it Neleshou

I reported this disappearance to the National Park Authority in 2015. Subsequent correspondence was made and they were certainly made aware of it and it's location in the adjacent quarry. They informed me that the stone would be re-instated but nothing still had happened when I last visited the site in June this year (2019) .
