The presence of the church within the Henge gives a stark illustration of the efforts made to christianise ancient sites. Yet now the church itself stands in ruins and the neolithic still seems to overshadow the Norman era here. A fascinating and thought-provoking place!

Jonographic visited on 13th Feb 2014 - their rating: Cond: 3 Amb: 3 Access: 5 Charming henge with reasonable turfed embankments surviving and portals to both East and West. Reminscent of Figsbury rings but on a more modest scale. Eastern end features Yew trees festooned with votives, ribbon and poetry. Central area has remains of Norman church in same orientation to the henge. Nearby round barrow not accesible as in farmed land, would be interesting to make the apparent connection.

Knowlton Rings submitted by Humbucker : Knowlton Rings with the ruined Norman church at the centre. (Vote or comment on this photo)
Henge in Dorset with a church built in the middle, which must point to early Christianisation of a pagan temple. There are actually three henges here, as shown in detailed research done by students of Bournemouth University.

They have have published much or their results on the web. Their site is so detailed I won't elaborate more here.

Access: Signposted off the B3078 from Wimborne to Cranborne.

Knowlton Dig 2016 by Andy B on Saturday, 14 May 2022
(User Info | Send a Message)
The excavation at Knowlton, run by the University of Southampton, investigated a possible Neolithic long barrow or mortuary enclosure located around 500m from the Knowlton henge complex. The trapezoidal anomaly, identified from cropmark evidence and limited geophysical survey suggests the presence of two diverging ditches or lines of pits/posts, most probably the flanking ditches of a ploughed out long mound.

Knowlton Henge talk with Dr Martin Green, 7 December 2017, Bath by Andy B on Wednesday, 29 November 2017
(User Info | Send a Message)
Martin Green, acclaimed for his farm and museum exhibits on Cranborne Chase, lives very close to the Knowlton complex where within an area of just over a square kilometre lie at least 7 henges,170 ring ditches and a prehistoric mound. It is the least studied of the great Wessex henge complexes although the most compact.

Work by Dr. Green and Southampton University in 2016 looked at a mini-complex east of the Church Henge. Excavations revealed a ‘short’ long barrow with ditches of unusual construction, including a unique chalk pedestal, new henges and enclosures and a high status Beaker burial. Martin will give the background to Knowlton before discussing last summer’s remarkable finds.

Bath Royal Literary and Scientific Institution, 16 Queen Square, Bath, BA1 2HN. Thursday 7 December, 7.30pm, with an admission charge of £4 for members (on display of a current BACAS membership card), and £5 for the general public.

Re: Knowlton Rings by Anonymous on Saturday, 24 March 2012
Visited this site for the first time, shocked to see that someone had lit a fire within the church and left nightlights everywhere, not cleaned up at all. Also the yew tress are covered with ribbons etc that won't biodegrade. Seems a pity for people to leave their rubbish, whether dong rituals or not ( I myself take part in rituals, so am not against them, but am careful to leave not a trace...)

A stone with prehistoric rock art has been found at the Knowlton Henges. More details in the Journal of the Prehistoric Society. Thanks to Baz for spotting this.
