Loudon Wood Recumbent Stone Circle in Aberdeenshire at NJ960497 must be one of the most difficult circles to find, as it is hidden in a relatively new plantation of firs.

According to the local who helped us find it visitors are discouraged to help preserve the integrity of the circle, BUT there are better ones close by!

Note: Loudon Wood recumbent stone cracked open by fire - lager drinking suspects are sought

Loudon Wood submitted by krautrock : Loudon Wood. Recumbent Stone Circle. Thanks to Cosmic for the right GPS datas. The circle is hard to find and we had a little adventure because i missed my cousins for a while. The information panel at the car park suggest a easy walk. Nevermind! We met a man at the car park, he was lost for 4 hours in that damned wood. June 2010 (1 comment)

Thanks for the comments. Historic Scotland have been informed and are assessing the situation. Apparently the other end of the recumbent suffered from fire damage last year and had to be repaired. Wonder if its the same people ?

Loudon Wood stone circle damaged by fire. by davidmorgan on Tuesday, 10 April 2012
(User Info | Send a Message)
From mattchapman:

Whilst visiting Loudon Wood stone circle on bank holiday Monday (9/4/12) I was disturbed to see a large fire had been lit by the inside of the western end of the recumbent. The heat generated has caused a large crack in the recumbent that runs across the tip of the stone. The stone inside the crack as can be seen is a deep salmon pink colour indicative of the heat generated by the fire. The scale on the multi tool is in CM. The fire and a piece of cardboard from a crate of Carlsberg seemed quite fresh as was a disposable BBQ nearby. The consequent action of freezing and thawing of any water entering the crack will only exasperate the damage and may cause the fragment to detach completely. Is there any way the crack can be filled to prevent water ingress? I don't know if the local authorities ,are aware of the damage and as I don't have a contact number if any of you do, please forward this to them. They can contact me through the portal and I'll send them the photos.

I suggest you contact Aberdeenshire Council Archaeology Service at Woodhill House, Aberdeen - 01224 664221.

Might also be worth tipping off the local paper, Aberdeen Press & Journal - newsdesk 01224 343311. If they run a story it will help educate the general public who probably think it scarcely possible to damage a 3000 year old lump of stone.

The last time I visited the stone circle the entrance to the 'off the beaten track' path was marked by a dead deer head up a tree, quite spooky!

Revisited to check directions to it:-
Park opposite track to North Auchmachar Farm.
Follow main track into wood.
Take first track on left.
After about three minutes walking look for narrow ride on right.
Go down it and Circle is along narrow path to right (again).
