TheCaptain visited on 17th Oct 2021 - their rating: Cond: 3 Amb: 4 Access: 3 Walking with friends out to Swyre Head then down to the coast path and along to Kimmeridge and back along the ridge. This huge mound has beautiful views but is much modified for its previous use as a windmill base, now a perfect place for a sit.

Swyre Head
Swyre Head submitted by JimChampion : The barrow on Swyre Head from the north-west. The permissive path from the coastal path at Rope Lake Head ends at the stile in the foreground, after a very steep climb up the escarpment. (Vote or comment on this photo)
This bowl barrow is the highest point in the Isle of Purbeck, on Swyre Head (not to be confused with the other Dorset Swyre Head on the coast to the west of Durdle Door). On a clear day there are fantastic views for many miles in all directions.

There is no obvious trace of the barrow's surrounding ditch, and its 2.5 metre-high, 25 metre-wide mound is steep-sided and flat-topped - probably a modification made in more recent times to convert the barrow into a 'windmill mound'. It is now surmounted by a large square stone and has gorse growing on its steep sides.

From historicengland.org.uk

Access Several paths lead uphill to the barrow. There is a car park west of Kingston (grid reference SY93417845), with a footpath that leads south-west to Swyre Head. There is another car park in an old quarry (grid reference SY93417845) above Kimmeridge village, and a bridleway leads south-east up and along Smedmore Hill to Swyre Head. There is also a signposted (and very steep) permissive path north then north-east across the Smedmore Estate from the coastal path at Rope Lake Head (grid reference SY93417845). The latter two routes are combined in the waymarked Kimmeridge "Round Walk".

Swyre Head
Swyre Head submitted by JimChampion : In the foreground is the large limestone block set into the top of the barrow mound. It has two deep grooves cut into it. I have no idea who put it here, or why. If you do know could you leave a comment below... (Vote or comment on this photo)

Swyre Head
Swyre Head submitted by JimChampion : View of the gorse-covered mound from the south. Swyre Head is the highest point in the Isle of Purbeck with spectacular views in all directions (hence the bench in the foreground).

Swyre Head
Swyre Head submitted by JimChampion : The southern side of the barrow at Swyre Head is overgrown with gorse. An approach causeway leads up to the mound, probably part of the modifications to the mound to make it into a 'windmill mound'.

Swyre Head
Swyre Head submitted by JimChampion : View south from the barrow on Swyre Head. The flat top of the hill comes to a south-facing point here, then drops off in a curve to the east. A stone bench and a wooden bench are provided for people to sit and enjoy the sea views (weather permitting). The southern side of the barrow mound is overgrown with gorse, seen here in the foreground.

Swyre Head
Swyre Head submitted by JimChampion : View west-north-west from the barrow on Swyre Head. Kimmeridge Bay in the distance, with the western end of the Purbeck chalk ridge in the far distance. In the foreground you can see the erosion at the edge of the flat-topped barrow mound. (2 comments)

Swyre Head submitted by JimChampion : Approaching the barrow at Swyre Head along the bridleway from the north-west (Kimmeridge and Smedmore Hill).
