Flower's Barrow
Flower's Barrow submitted by JimChampion : June 2005. Looking across to Flower's barrow cliff fort from Mupe bay. A patch of sunlight is illuminating the hill and the outline of the ramparts can be made out against the sky. The right hand side of the fort is disappearing into the sea! We had walked far enough to get to this point, keeping on going to Flower's barrow was out of the question. Not an easy site to access! (Vote or comment on this photo)
This is a hillfort with a limited future. The south side is falling into the sea at Worbarrow Bay, with perhaps even half of it having already disappeared.

The pair of parallel ramparts are clearly visible on the north, east and west. It is possible there never were ramparts on the south side, with the cliff top acting as defence.

There are hut circles visible within the interior, and a minor excavation in 1939 found a few artefacts.

With the ground disturbance on the southern part, one can not help wandering if there are easy archaeological finds waiting to be discovered. However, the twin perils of cliff erosion and the possibility of unexploded tank shells dictate extreme caution.

Watch out for the ranges opening times (which can be checked on the Defence Estates Website) and heed all warning signs!

Access on foot can be from Tyneham, with a very steep uphill walk, or alternatively, park at Whiteway Hill viewing point / car park, and walk along the hill to the west.

Flower's Barrow
Flower's Barrow submitted by TheCaptain : The southern side of Flowers Barrow hillfort, looking west over Mupe Bay and Bindon Hill towards Portland. There has been a massive cliff fall here in recent years, taking away substantial amounts of the fort, with more waiting to go. Compare to the photo from 2005 (Vote or comment on this photo)

Flower's Barrow submitted by JimChampion : Slippage of the Flower's Barrow interior. Some of the exposed chalk is showing through after a very dry summer (and grazing sheep) have limited growth. The western rampart can be seen in the mid distance and the northern rampart is to the right of the person on the path.

Flower's Barrow
Flower's Barrow submitted by TimPrevett : Looking east across the entire length of the interior of the hillfort. This was huge. For a sense of scale, notice the figure to the left at the sign, and the pill box to the rear right which sits upon the middle rampart.

Visited yesterday - a very long walk along the ridge, but worth it. Superb views, fantastic earthworks - though limited access to the entire site due to the possibility of unexploded shells on the MOD ranges. A very good interpretive sign, with picnic area. Pictures and more write up to follow in time.
