Round Hill, Birkett Common Round Cairns
Round Hill, Birkett Common Round Cairns submitted by MonumentMan : Riverine cobbles on Cairn A, looking back towards Round Hill (Vote or comment on this photo)
Round Cairn in Cumbria. A group of three cairns, situated at the base of Round Hill, next to the south bank of the River Eden flowing out of Mallerstang Valley. The largest of the round cairns (A) is the most prominent, partly due to its large size (diameter 21m, 1.5-2.5m high) and construction.

Cairn A is a partly turf covered flat topped mound backing onto the River Eden and is covered in many water worn river cobbles (similar riverine cobbles are seen in the construction of Mayburgh Henge,Penrith ~ maybe symbolic)
A central depression on Cairn A (4.5m wide, 1.2m deep) in which past excavation by Greenwell revealed the burnt bones of a child, is surrounded by a low circular bank dissected by a single entrance threshold at 20degrees North. This clear entrance aligns with a single large limestone boulder 80m south of the cairn, at the foot of Round Hill.

Two more small turf covered cairns (B&C) lie 40-60m south of Cairn A. Cairn (B) (centred NY 7766 0441) is 7.5m in diameter and has a slightly stony central pit, 2.5m in diameter and 0.4m deep. Cairn (C) (centred NY 7768 0441) is situated on the edge of a low SE -facing scarp. It is 7.5m by 6.5m and has a shallow central pit 1.8m in diameter.
