Early Christian Sculptured Stone in Cumbria. The Loki Stone at NY.775088 is a Christianised 8th to 10th century stone. This rare 1 metre high stone stands on a more recent stepped stone in St Stephen's Church, Kirkby Stephen, Cumbria. It depicts Loki the Norse god bound and chained to a rock for eternity, or until the twilight of the gods.

He does not look at all pleased; not the sort of person to mess with. Loki was the god of strife - also called 'the bound devil'. On the sides of the stone there is scrollwork patterning.

The church site probably dates back to 850 AD although the church is 13th century. Also within the church there is a stone with a tiny, incised cross carved in the middle of a circle. This may have once formed part of a cross, or the shaft of a cross.
