Northdown (Dorset)
Northdown (Dorset) submitted by JimChampion : April 2005. The group of round barrows nearest to the ruins of Northdown Barn: those on the highest ground (near a trig point) are 158m above sea level but only 2km from the sea. A spectacularly lofty resting place for any Bronze-ager. (Vote or comment on this photo)
Barrow Cemetery in Dorset. Another Dorset Bronze Age barrow cemetery in a spectacular chalk-ridge setting, akin to the nearby Bincombe and Came Wood barrow cemeteries. At this site the barrows are sited along the chalk ridge of the imaginatively named West and East Hills on either side of Spring Bottom. Some of the barrows survive intact, some have a good covering of gorse, and others have been all but lost under the plough.

Access The site is worth visiting for the incredible natural features alone, along with the views over Weymouth Bay. The inland South-West Coast Path passes alongside these barrows between Green Hill and White Horse Hill. Any approach along footpaths from the south (e.g. from Sutton Poyntz) will involve a very steep walk up the cliff. From the north side on top of the downs take the appropriately named Chalky Road (from Broadmayne or Bincombe) and at the Poor Lot bank barrow turn down a very rutted and potholed chalk track. If your vehicle survives, there is room to park on the verge by Northdown Barn.

Northdown (Dorset)
Northdown (Dorset) submitted by TimPrevett : Moonrise over the Ridgeway, West Hill, part of the Northdown group of barrows. Had a great 5 hour walk from Preston, Sutton Poyntz, along the Ridgeway, the Bank Barrow, Bincombe, then back around Chalbury. As I came over the last ridge, this sight greeted me just after sunset. Northdown (Dorset)
Northdown (Dorset) submitted by JimChampion : April 2005. This picture gives an idea of the impressive geographical context of the Northdown barrows, perched on top of the chalk cliff. This view is of East Hill from West Hill, and the two highest barrows are clearly visible on the summit. (Vote or comment on this photo)
