Heston Brake
Heston Brake submitted by TheCaptain : Heston Brake, Chambered Tomb in Monmouthshire, ST505887 View of the remains from the rear of the chamber (Vote or comment on this photo)
Chambered Tomb with Long Mound situated on a hillock overlooking the Severn estuary and the Second Severn Crossing. Located off a minor road to the north of Portskewett near Caldicot and marked on various OS maps as Dolmen or Long Barrow.

The stones are puddingstones (conglomerate glacial erratics) and mark the front of the eroded entrance grave. A long parallel sided chamber is covered by a badly damaged long mound, with entrance at the eastern end.

This chambered tomb is recorded as Coflein NPRN 300078, the latest entry dated 1989 reading: "A chambered long barrow measuring 25m long, 12m wide and height averaging 1m. Excavations in 19thC revealed 'two chambers lying E and W and connected internally'. Most of the mound has been removed".

The Journal of Antiquities also includes an entry for Heston Brake Long Barrow, Portskewett, Monmouthshire, Wales, which includes a photograph, a plan of the tumulus, a description and brief history, quotations from a number of reference sources, and a list of reference sources for more information.

The remains of this chambered tomb lie on top of a nice little hill, splendidly positioned near Portskewett, overlooking the Caldicot Levels and the Severn Estuary. These flat marshy regions bordering the Severn Estuary are known to have been very important places in prehistoric times. It is easily reached from a footpath which crosses the field in which it resides.

On top of the hill are the remains of what was obviously once a fairly large mound containing a chambered tomb. The remains of this tomb consist of two large entrance stones, with a chamber, approximately 8 metres long, by 1.5 to 2 metres wide, facing in an approximately south easterly direction. The tomb seems to consist of a main chamber about 3m long, at the far end from the entrance stones, with a passageway leading to it. The main chamber is nicely surrounded by large stone slabs, one of which has an intriguing hole through it. There is at least one stone set at right angles across the front of the main chamber, which was either closed off, or had some form of inner entranceway. The larger of the two big entrance stones is made from a splendid red coloured puddingstone.
