MacBeth's Stone
MacBeth's Stone submitted by Nick : Leave Meigle on the road marked "Belmont Centre" and follow this for approximately 1-1/2 km west from Meigle. Pass the entrance to Belmont Castle and proceed to the entrance to Belmont Centre. There is sufficient space to park at the side here. Enter through the gate, and about 25m in there is a little path cutting back on the right hand side. Follow this and you'll see the stone almost immedi... (Vote or comment on this photo)
This is a truly magnificent stone. Although nothing to do with Macbeth it is a worthy tribute to one of Scotlands greatest Kings. Macbeth law underpins much of Scots Law and he did reign unopposed - except by the Norse - for seventeen years.

There are cupmarks on both main faces of the stone, 4 or 5 on the north face, and quite a number on the southern face. Unfortunately, it has also suffered from vandalism with some names and initials carved on the eastern portion, along with (more suitably), a thistle..

More information can be found on Canmore ID 30824, which tells us: "This large standing stone is situated immediately SW of the gate-lodge on the SW side of the Belmont Castle policies; it measures 1.85m by 1.3m at the base and 3.6m in height, and gently tapers to a thickness of no more than 0.3m at the top. On the broad E face there are at least forty cupmarks, measuring up to 60mm in diameter, and most are disposed across the face in a band about 1.4m above the ground. On the W face there are a further twenty-four cupmarks (up to 70mm in diameter), but they are more randomly spaced across the lower half of the stone. In addition, there are two cupmarks low down on the S face and a single cupmark on the N face."

The Northern Antiquarian (TNA) also features a page for this stone stone/cup marked stone - see their entry for MacBeth’s Stone, Belmont, Meigle, Perthshire, which gives directions for finding this site, together with photographs, an image of the first OS map showing the location of the stone, an 1884 drawing of the stone and an archaeology & history. TNA adds: "This is a magnificent site.  A giant of a stone.  Almost the effigy of a King, petrified, awaiting one day to awaken and get the people behind him!  It has that feel of awe and curiosity that some of us know very well at these less-visited, quieter megalithic places."

This is a magnificent stone, standing fully 16 feet tall, a seriously massive piece of rock. There are cup marks on both the northern and southern faces, most on the S.

MacBeth's name is strongly linked with this area. Birnam Wood lies up by Dunkeld, there are traces of a hill fort on Dunsinane Hill a few kilometres SSE, and a nearby hill to this is still named King's Seat. Despite the bad press he received from the Saxon playwright, Shakespeare (who never visited Scotland, and was sucking up to the Stewart monarchy), MacBeth is regarded as one of the better monarchs of Scotland during the troubled times he lived in. He reigned for 17 years, and was the penultimate Celtic King of Scots.

This stone is an appropriate monument to one of Scotland's better kings!
