Broch in Orkney

Carrying on past the Ring of Brodgar and over the hill on which Buckan stands it is easy to miss the Lyking road on the left as the signpost is that small. Going past the farm of Lyking on the right Stackrue Broch comes into view. First impression is that this stands a little higher than Oxtro but the stones are smaller. Just the usual "remnants of broch" then. Nearer and I see the other end and am surprised by the size of the blocks in the wall here and how bright they look. This is the actual broch wall standing several courses tall. Looking back it is obvious I am seeing structures from at least two periods. Only now am I struck by what should have struck me from the start, a large deep ditch running around the site. Somewhere about the middle of the building I think I see a void behind some slabs. The 'broch' end in the ditch against the bank are several large slabs of stone and nearer the road a few what look like standing stones. [ On the Monday I find out the other side of the road is a subterranean passage and a little distance away and closer to the loch lie, or lay, the turf footings of a chapel and a burial ground ] .

Don't know how I missed the entrance to the ?souterrain before, just inside the fence on the S side of the road at HY2706715113. Guess I looked for a channel further down whereas it starts as a hole like a badgers set (no sign of the masonry walls in the dark) literally a couple of feet from the actual fence behind three flat stones. I assume these are a few of the lintels from the intermittent roof of the built passage. This is described as 800cm square to begin with, though perhaps narrow further on - it goes SE'erly to a ditch but after some 2.5m turns quickly eastwards and then the hillslope and presence of mud stopped investigations progressing to what they describe as the inner end (or else it goes ~100m down to the loch). By the western stone I could see a masonry wall of thin stones behind a grass fringe. Not wishing to disturb the ploughman in the next field I left matters there. This side of the road the 'broken' mound is ascribed to outbuildings on account of projecting stones but it is obvious that the passage is within the tower's circuit - at The Howe we found a souterrain which had been struck through the tomb at the centre of the broch so the road might have demolished a northerly continuance.
