South Knowe
South Knowe submitted by howar : Mound looking northwards with Ring of Bodgar bank at far right (Vote or comment on this photo)
Artificial Mound in Orkney. NMRS record no. HY21SE 15 is an 18m D 1.8m high level topped mound of earth and stones with a "shallow" depression from which projects 0.5m x 0.5m of an irregular shaped stone. As the Ring of Brodgar site was levelled off in antiquity the stone was either brought in from elsewhere later or is an original feature later covered by the mound (it is very close to the circle's bank).

The mound itself is of an irregular shape and would appear to have been excavated more than once.
Surprised I have never published it before, though it is rather nondescript. Walk around the outside of the bank of the Ring of Brodgar and you can't miss it. The ?central stone is stuck fast, not just dropped there. The central excavation pit is a lot neater than the 'scrapings' around the sides.
