just returned from a CPAt lecture on this hillfort . by Dr Belfield. there are trees planted to commemorate the coronation ,that can only be seen from the air. EiiR.
the forester who planted them was "communicating" with his sons spirit , who was a pilot who died in the Battle of Britain.He did some pictograms ? on other plantations he was employed on. there had been at least one previous plantation in the 19th century felled about 1909, and a trig point in 1948
the latest evidence as yet unpublished is that the ramparts were built between 300 and 150 bc.
using a quartz luminescence technique
there is now some evidence to suggest the "fort" was never finished or used

If you look at this site on google earth you can see E II R spelt out in different tree species by the patriotic tree planter in the year of the coronation. like the Uffington white horse this would only be seen properly from the air. this was done before the nearby airfield existed
this will be lost soon

Re: Beacon Ring by Anonymous on Sunday, 30 January 2011
I walked the section of Offa's Dyke that goes through here in 1996, It was mid September and I was on my own, as the footpath went through the edge of this site it appeared to go very quiet, no birds singing and even my own footsteps were muffled by the pine needles on the ground, puting it simply. i was happy to get out to the other side.

Having said that I'd go back again!

A univallate hillfort on the highest point of Long Mountain offering incredible views over Shropshire and the Welsh mountains to the West. Welshpool is clearly visible from the Southern rampart.

Access is via the Offa's Dyke footpath which passes across part of the defences and through the original Southern entrance, however access to the entire site is restricted by a radio station and two unsightly masts.

There is a considerable defensive bank and an outer ditch. The interior of the fort was planted with a mainly deciduous memorial plantation in 1953 and is eerily uniform in layout.

A round barrow survives as an earthwork somewhere on the summit.
