Dwarfie Stane
Dwarfie Stane submitted by steveco : Dwarfie Stane Rock Cut Tomb HY244005. Unique to the this area of abundant ancient sites. (Vote or comment on this photo)
The Dwarfie Stane Rock Cut Tomb on the Isle of Hoy is unique to this area of abundant ancient sites.

Text from information board near the monument:

This unique monument has attracted attention for centuries and many scholars have visited it and theorised. It has been described as the dwelling place of giants, of dwarves, and as the home of an early Christian hermit.

It was actually a tomb, related to the many chambered cairns found throughout Orkney. It dates to between 3500 and 2500 BC. Its construction, carved from a single enormous block of stone, is without parallel in the British Isles. The labour involved, given the lack of metal tools, suggests that although small, it may have been of special significance.

This rock cut tomb is recorded as Canmore ID 1597, which includes field and archaeology notes, a publication account and photographs.

The Journal of Antiquities also includes an entry for The Dwarfie Stone, Hoy, Orkney Islands, which includes a photograph, a description, background information and a list of reference sources for more information.

This is the only rock cut tomb shown on this website. Please remove Garn Gilfach in Wales as a rock cut tomb as it is should be classified as a dolmen or chambered tomb sitting on small orthostats. See my comments that 50 m south of Garn Gilfach is another dolmen, albeit with a broken capstone and collapsed, unrecorded with CADW.
