Though the west, or seaward, side of this mostly amorphous mound has had some bites taken out of it by the waters at various times it is believed to be mostly intact as a broch. It is identified as the latter by a 25m by 14m cut on the south some 2m high with a curving eight-course wall of middling stones in a stretch about 6m long. Whether this is an outer wall or part of an internal structure is uncertain, though it is evident to me (especially from the top) that the whole is not 'of one piece'. Feels like an entranceTwo features described in 1946 can no longer be seen, though one could be represented by the further possible wall traces to the north of the exposed wall (mentioned by the O.S in 1966) and something somewhat circular can be felt underfoot (I practically fell into it) as you walk from the top of the wall over to a large and quite deep circular depression at the north side of the central portion. The first structure, a circular segment measuring 3m by 2.4m, lay N/S E/W and connected by a passage only about 0.6m long and 1.12m in height almost to the west end of the chief wall that you see. The exposed section doesn't quite reach to the highest point of the mound, which is why so much is believed to have survived. Over on the east side is the most visible structure, a planty creugh [also planti-crû or planticru], being a circular wall of more recent times that would have been used to grow tender plants [though that near Kokna-Cumming is shown as square]. Obviously stones have been re-used to make this the curves might reflect earlier stuff. Over at the north end that hollow may be as deep as the cut and has at the back a few stones that could be part of a wall line. It may be that the broch at its height stood not much above the present mound, and it certainly goes no lower because in the region of the cut you can see that like Inganess and Berstane it has been built straight onto a rocky shelf (though not on a cliff - originally it might well have been further from the coastline in compensation).
I wonder if this entire stretch of coast could actually have once been called Gammi Sea, from the Knowe of Gemashowe through Cummi Ness and the knowes of Gimme's Howe to [or including] Gorrie Knowe just north of here.
