Battlegore submitted by theCaptain : More interesting is the remains of a possible neolithic chambered barrow, situated by the hedge between the northern and central barrows. The remains of this possible destroyed long barrow consists of three large stones. The largest is 3.1 metres long. (Vote or comment on this photo)
Remnants of three large round barrows and other monuments including a stone setting are to be found in the fields opposite to Danesfield School.

The furthest north barrow (ST07414166), in the field just to the south of the stream, is around 18 metres diameter and 1 metre high. It is partially surrounded by a ditch. In the field opposite the school is the central round barrow (ST07494156), which was around 2.4 metres high in 1969, but seems ploughed down to half of that now. The southernmost barrow (ST07494139) is around 27 metres in diameter and 1.8 metres in height. Unlike the previous barrow, this one has not been ploughed, and so is in better condition.

Perhaps more interesting is the remains of a possible neolithic chambered barrow (ST07454162), situated in the hedge between the northern and central barrows. The remains of this now destroyed long barrow consists of three large stones. The largest is 3.1 metres long, 1.2 metres wide, and .7 metres deep; the second-largest is 1.6 metres long, while the smallest is 1 metre long.

According to legend, a contest between the devil and a giant caused these stones to be thrown there.

This site, which was excavated by H St George Gray, the archaeologist famous for his work at Avebury and Arbor Low, in 1931, is believed to be the remains of a burial chamber of unknown type.

A Bronze age barrow cemetery is associated with this site, at least five barrows have been discovered as earthworks and crop marks.
