I have visited· I would like to visit

Anne T visited on 13th Jul 2018 - their rating: Cond: 3 Amb: 4 Access: 4 The Boat Stone, Sheriffmuir to Dunblane lane: Marked on the OS map, but not on Canmore, this fallen standing stone is featured on the Portal and The Northern Antiquarian. The road is single track at this point, with not many passing places. The farmer had left the gate into the field wide open, and it was dry, bare soil. We dared to pull the car just inside the gate. The farmer had heaped a beautifully large pile of maturing manure between the gate and the stone, so I took a slightly wider berth round this than I might have, with the heat and the flies! This large stone is impressive. It sites on a mound (I walked around it to photograph it and had to step up the mound to get to the top of the stone) and has some lovely quartz inclusions.

The Boat Stone
The Boat Stone submitted by hamish : After you have been to Sherriffmuir Stones keep on up the road. Don't try to find Wester Briggs Circle, it's hidden in the heather. Just down the road past the woods on the left is the Boat Stone. You have to clamber over the stone wall with a barbed wire topping to get to this stone. Nearly broke my leg but survived. A boat shaped recumbent stone. In a field near the wall by the roadside.

Update April 2017: The Northern Antiquarian (TNA) feature a page on this standing stone. See their entry fo Boat Stone, Blackford, Perthshire, where they give directions on how to find the stone, give a brief archaeology and history of the site and include some more photographs.

The Boat Stone
The Boat Stone submitted by Anne T : Standing on top of the mound, looking down at the southern, 'pointy' end of the stone. (Vote or comment on this photo)

The Boat Stone
The Boat Stone submitted by Anne T : Standing just to the east of the stone, looking across it, westwards, to the corner of the field. Here the stone looks short and chunky, but it's quite long, at least 3-4m, by my estimation (TNA confirms 13 ft). (Vote or comment on this photo)

The Boat Stone
The Boat Stone submitted by Anne T : Close up of one of the quartz inclusions in this stone, which also has some wonderful quartz veins which sparkle in the sunlight. There are also small holes where small pebbles have eroded out of it, and striations down its length and at various angles across it (presumably from glaciation?). Would love to find out more. The Boat Stone
The Boat Stone submitted by Anne T : Standing at the 'pointed' end of the stone, nearest to the road. It looks very quarried with neat, clean edges. There are some wonderful quartz inclusions and veins in this stone, together with striations down its length and at angles across it.

The Boat Stone
The Boat Stone submitted by Anne T : From the gate into the field, the stone is on a mound to your south, right in the corner of the field. The farmer clearly takes care to mow around the stone and the mound it's on. When we visited, there was a wonderfully big pile of maturing manure just off the photograph to the left hand side. We were not deterred, despite the flies!

The Boat Stone
The Boat Stone submitted by hamish : You can see the size of this stone, it must have been quite a sight when upright.
