History Gallery: On a combined Megalithic Meet and Northern Earth Walk, a group member discovered this Sheela Na Gig / Exhibitionist being devoured by a seemingly bewhiskered beastie. Opinion seems to be divided as to whether or not it is a "proper" Sheela. This was amongst a pile of cross fragments at the interior rear of the church building. This is the first discovery of its kind in Staffordshi

If you visit St Peter's, Alstonefield, take a look at this sundial on the southern side. Is this a cross shaft re-used under the more modern mount? Everyone in the group I was with opined in union that it was so.

St Peters Church, Alstonefield More of the cross fragments, some are unfinished, leading experts to believe that the crosses were actually carved on site, and that there may have been a "school" of carving here.

St Peter's Church, Alstonefield. These cross fragments were built into the fabric of the porch during the late 1800's . The left and right hand fragements look medieval to me, but could the central fragment be earlier? Its nice to see how the stone cross tradition continued through the ages at this site.

St Peter's Church, Alstonefield. Under the jumble of cross fragements, there is a six sided Saxon font. It may have been created for the early Saxon church.

St Peter's Church, Alstonefield. This is an ancient Saxon stone coffin. Laid across its top are several fragments of crosses. The crosses were created around 900AD, shortly after a visit by St Oswald, Archbishop of York, who visited the settlement of Alstonefield to bring the people back to Christianity.

    Confused

Looking for a stone circle, only to find a church cross!

Until the last photo where Callanish XII is mentioned.
