Gallowhill Wood
Gallowhill Wood submitted by SandyG : Stone 1 in the foreground has been split. Stone 3 in the background has been incorporated into a later field boundary.  The absence of any other large stones in the vicinity combined with the fact that the stones can be resolved into a line means that this is probably a stone row. View from above and north (Scale 1m).

The 4-digit grid reference for this site, NO 16 35, does not specify a single point but rather a kilometre square extending east and north from NO 16000 35000. The OS maps on RCAHMS website show no stones in this square though there are 3 stone sites just outside: a former circle (East Whitefield), a former standing stone (Hangies Stone) and a former stone row (Gallowhill Wood (East Gallowhill)) just outside this square. I suspect this entry is a duplicate of the last.

It would be very helpful if the Portal maps could show such vague grid references as shaded areas on the map, not as defined points. A 4 digit reference covers a kilometre square, a 6 digit reference covers a 100m square, and so on. This would help to eliminate duplicate site listings and avoid pointless searching around a single point.
