I have visited· I would like to visit

Anne T visited on 26th Sep 2017 - their rating: Cond: 4 Amb: 4 Access: 3 Airthrey Castle Standing Stone, Stirling University: I have visited the University of Stirling on a number of occasions over the years, visiting an organisation at the Beta Innovation Park, but not known (until I saw them on the Portal) that there were standing stones within the grounds. We parked at the Wallace Monument, thinking it would be quick half hour walk around Stirling University Campus. Wrong! From the car park, we walked east up Hillfoots Road (the B989) cutting into the Alpha Centre Innovation Park, then walking round the east side of the lake to the University Sports Ground. As soon as we reached the fence into this area, this huge standing stone stood out. I found the stiles a little too high for my dodgy knees, so it was interesting getting over them! The surrounding hills, and the view back to the Wallace Monument make this an interesting spot. There were lots of dog walkers and students around, but none seemed to take any notice of the stone – presumably they are all familiar with it. By the time we’d visited Logie Old Church and the Pathfoot Standing Stone, my feet were aching! But no time to relax – Stirling Castle called with a loud, clear voice!

Standing Stone in Stirling

A fine stone situated beside a rugby pitch in Stirling University campus grounds. A.F. Hutchinson (“The Standing Stones of Stirling District,” in The Stirling Antiquary, volume 1, 1893) measured it as being “9ft 1in in height. Its greatest breadth is 4ft 10in, and its circumference 14ft.” Whether it is ancient or a mediaeval marker stone of some kind is not clear.

For more information see Canmore ID 47115 which adds that the stone is "made of dark grey dolerite, is oblong in section and leans slightly south west (along the line of the main axis."

Canmore adds that this standing stone is not to be confused with the standing stone at NS 8141 9661 just over 100 metres to the north (see Canmore ID 47114 which says: "This 'stone' is in fact comprised of three stones set upright edge to edge in the form of a triangle, each measuring 0.6m by 0.05m by 1.0m high. The local former stated that they marked the junction of the ancient Clackmannan, Perthshire, and Stirlingshire county boundaries." One of the stones carries an inscription, but this entry was made in 1950!

The Northern Antiquarian (TNA) also feature a page for this stone - see their entry for Airthrey Stone, Stirling University, Stirlingshire, which has directions for finding the stone together with photographs, a brief archaeology & history and local folklore.

Airthrey Stone
Airthrey Stone submitted by Anne T : This 2.7 metre high stone is made of grey dolerite. I wonder if it has been kept in its original position or moved here. My husband and I both wondered what happened if a rugby ball hit it during matches, as it was positioned at the corner of a couple of pitches. (Vote or comment on this photo)

Airthrey Stone
Airthrey Stone submitted by rogerkread : That's the Wallace monument in the mist behind the stone. I was able to pick out a route to get to the stone by looking down from the top of the monument. It is only a short distanve from Stirling University car parks, with good paths leading to the playing field - a low wire fence needs to be stepped over but wooden blocks and a handy pole beside them make this no problem.
