TheCaptain visited on 26th Feb 2019 - their rating: Cond: 2 Amb: 3 Access: 3 Just south of the Giant's Grave is a smaller, but much more clear to see cairn, about 10m diameter and still with some semblance of a retaining circle of stones.
AngieLake have visited here
This cairn was a little more recognisable than its neighbour, the Giant's Grave. We were still glad of our Butlers to help identify it, and noticed that a stone was still standing in the SSW of its outer ring.
In his 'Dartmoor Atlas of Antiquities, Vol. 5', Butler tells us:
"A few metres from the ring cairn the ridgeway track continues northwards before being deflected around a pair of large cairns on the highest point: 3 [ref. to his map, a sketch copy of which is on site page for Mardon Down S circle], (10.0 x 0.8 m), a flat-topped mound with traces of an outer ring still maintaining a good shape despite the shallow trench into the centre."
Update November 2019: This cairn is featured on the Prehistoric Dartmoor Walks (PDW) website - see their entries for the Mardon Down S.E. of Giants Grave Cairn Circle and the Mardon Down Stone Circle & Cairns.
The cairn is also recorded as part of Pastscape Monument No. 445366 and as MDV8310 on the Devon and Dartmoor HER.
