Catrinm visited on 2nd Jul 2023 - their rating: Cond: 3 Amb: 4 Access: 3 Cairn circle and cist quite well preserved , with view to the sea and Rame Head on a clear day. **MP can this be labeled as cairn circle and cist as it is not a cairn.

Brockhill Ford
Brockhill Ford submitted by Bladup : Brockhill Ford. It's listed above as a stone circle but it's really a cairn circle and cist (ed.: amended, thanks). This is a photo of the ruined cist [foreground] and some circle stones [background]. (Vote or comment on this photo)
Cairn circle with cist.

Update August 2019: This cairn with cist is featured on the Prehistoric Dartmoor Walks (PDW) website - see their entry for the Brockhill Ford Ring Setting Cairn and Cist. PDW tells us: "The side stones, both 1.4m long, lean inwards and the end stones north west 0.7m long, southeast 0.8m long, are firmly set. The probable coverstone, 1.2m by 0.8m, is displaced and lies to the south east of the cist. The cist is surrounded by the remains of a stone circle, long axis 8.8m, aligned with cist, short axis 7.2m."

This monument is also recorded as Pastscape Monument No. 441411, which classifies this as a 'stone circle with cist'. The Devon & Dartmoor HER also includes an entry for this site: MDV5234 (Cist with retaining Stone Circle 200 metres north of Avon Dam Reservoir).

Worth visiting and accessible but MP can it be accurately labelled cairn circle and cist not cairn as there is explicitly no cairn

Hi Catrinm, I hope your well, There isn't cairn circle or kerb cairn in the list of things to call the site on the portal, You only have cairn or cist to choose from, I thought cist was downplaying the site because of it's kerb, So i chose cairn instead, I agree that this isn't quite right, I myself would like to have called it a 'kerb cairn with cist', I'm guessing you would call it a 'cist with kerb'. I asked years ago for kerb cairn to be added to the site list (for cairns with kerbs) but i understand now how that could be problematic for like you said 'a kerb without any cairn material', I will end by saying that sometimes the cairn material is very low and under the turf at a kerb cairn with cist but it's often there nevertheless.
