This Iron Age Hillfort and settlement hides its secret remarkably well – even from very close, the defensive walls look just like a rock-coverd hilltop. An aerial photo on the RCAHMW site persuaded us to check it out, and it was a remarkable place.

COFLEIN describes Craig-y-Dinas as a “Stone walled polygonal hillfort 75mx40m with outworks extending 14m to NE, and extensive entrance works (walled trackway and stone clearance) to SE”. That is quite a size!

The staggered entrance would have been easily defended – not as formidable as those at Tre’r Ceiri across on the Llyn Peninsula, which I rather think is visible from Craid-y-Dinas (but which I need to check out with the bearings). The Google map shows it rather well – but don’t rely on a GPS, as ours went haywire as soon as we reached it, and the resulting tracks look like a seismograph plot in an earthquake!

I had not been able to find much text on the site before visiting it, but there did seem to be a possible stone cist-type structure at the western end on the enclosure – there can’t be many better places to be laid to rest! More research needed on this though, and I will post some pictures for comment in a couple of days.

In terms of access, there is a substantial dry-stone wall to be negotiated from the track near the Pont Scethin stones, and we saw no other obvious access.

Craig-y-Dinas (Dyffryn Ardudwy) submitted by pab : In sight of Craig-y-Dinas, this stone caught my attention - it had clearly been subjected to some human action. I wondered if its marking were possibly from some form of ancient working on axe-heads etc - any thoughts anyone? I have more pictures and GPS position if anyone thinks it's worth following up.

The substantial dry-stone wall to be negotiated (mentioned above) now has a ladder style to aid access to the site.
