Narrator Brookhead Cairn
Narrator Brookhead Cairn submitted by TheCaptain : This is a big old cairn about 20 metres in diameter, and up to 2 metres high. (Vote or comment on this photo)
This is a big old cairn which lies in line with the Down Tor stone row, about 150 metres distant from its eastern end. The cairn is about 20 metres in diameter, and up to 2 metres high. It is mostly a pile of clear granite stones, but in places it looks like there may be some structure to parts of it.

Fairly inconspicuous relative to the large cairn, are two much smaller cairns at its base on the southwest side, both only a couple of metres diameter, but both showing signs of side set slabs. These reminded me of the Giants Basin, with its smaller cairns around it.

There are other less conspicuous cairns around here.

Update November 2019: This cairn is featured on the Prehistoric Dartmoor Walks (PDW) website - see their entries for the Hingston Hill Chambered Cairn and the Down Tor Stone Row and Cairn Circle, which tells us this large cairn which can be found on the north-western side of Down Tor (Hingston Hill) stone row has been claimed to contain a cist; it is a large round cairn located on the flat saddle of Hingston Hill, measuring 17m in diameter.

The cairn is also recorded as Pastscape Monument No. 438589, as MDV3375 (Cairn 170 metres north-east of Down Tor Stone Row) on the Devon and Dartmoor HER, and scheduled as Historic England List Entry No. 1009092 (Round cairn east of Down Tor, 770m north east of Combshead Tor).

Narrator Brookhead Cairn submitted by SandyG : The Hingston Hill row is aligned upon this cairn. Despite being 180m from the eastern end of the row it seems very likely that the row and the cairn probably at one time were seen as forming part of the same experience. View from north west (Scale 1m).
