Llanbedr
Llanbedr submitted by TimPrevett : The spiral stone in Llanbedr Church (St Peters); the higher part of the stone has been highlighted by chalk (not by us!). The stone was originally found out in the mountains (location not known), then placed with the other stones in the village, then outside the church, then inside the church... now behind the font, as the picture shows. Re: Llanbedr - the spiral carved stone by AngieLake on Wednesday, 22 June 2011
(User Info | Send a Message)
We were grateful to Adam Sandford for recommending this stone to us when we met him at Arthur's Stone.
In St. Peter's church is a leaflet on Llanbedr which mentions the stone.
Quote:
"The district has strong links with the Bronze Age in the form of cairns and standing stones. A particularly fine example of a decorated stone is preserved in the church.
It is nearly 200 years ago since this stone was 'recovered'. It was found by a Dr. Griffith Griffith of Taltreuddyn, Llanenddwyn, according to his report to the Cambrian Archaeological Association "... in Dyffryn Ardudwy, on the hills near some early stone remains...", and to avoid its destruction had brought it to the site of "... the two meinihirion at Llanbedr", (behind the petrol station)."
[NB: The leaflet describes how to find the two monoliths "just behind the petrol-filling station". Please note this petrol station has gone and its site must be now occupied by new houses.]
"There it remained for some years until it was moved to a place outside the west wall of the church (circa 1910). Now it has a safe home inside the church.
Formed of andesite granite, it stands 2'9" high, having a width of 2'0" at its base, tapering to 1'0" at the top and is 1'2" thick. The design consists of an incised groove about an inch in width, and a quarter of an inch deep, forming a seven turn spiral having an overall diameter of twelve inches. The decoration is clearly akin to that found at Barclodiad-y-Gawres, Anglesey, which is associated with the Irish Boyne culture. The ultimate origin of the spiral decoration can be traced back to Egypt. From thence to Scandinavia, Britain and Ireland where it arrived several centuries before Christ. In Britain, spirals were at first only found on stones and rock surfaces, but later on they were made use of for decorating various things."
