An Iron Age hill fort is being closed - because it's too popular with dog walkers.

Visitors have caused erosion at several points around the ramparts of Boringdon Camp, an Ancient Monument above Cann Woods, near Plympton in Devon.

South Hams District Council, which owns the site, is closing it to allow the Iron Age earthworks to recover.

The ramparts used to be managed and protected by grazing sheep, but they were taken away five years ago because too many were being killed by dogs.

John Ette from Historic England in the South West said: "Boringdon Camp is an important Iron Age monument, protected by law. The hill fort is at risk from serious erosion to its ancient ramparts.

I mapped this site and the adjacent Plym Forest for orienteering purposes in 1984. Two large and distinctive gullies run from the east edge of the hill fort, one running just west of south and the other just north of north east. Both extend, more or less, to the edges of the woodland. Their original purpose escapes me. They appear to be associated with the hill fort, rather than the extensive more recent mining and other activities in the area, and are too deep and narrow to have been carved out by wheeled traffic.
