markj99 visited on 3rd Jun 2025 - their rating: Cond: 3 Amb: 4 Access: 3 It is some kind of miracle that these cup carvings were discovered in a rocky field c. 0.5 mile N of Bardristane Farm: Maarten van Hoek was systematically searching for Rock Art on Bardristane in 1993 when he found these eroded cup carvings. They are unimpressive but they exist as remnants of ancient people.
Bardristane 3 Carved Stone is located 0.5 mile N of Bardristane Farm on the Solway Coast in Dumfries and Galloway. This isolated stone was recorded in 1993 by Maarten van Hoek, a Dutch Academic in Rock Art. According to "van Hoek, M. (1993e) 'Bardistane 3 (Anwoth parish): rock carvings', Discovery Excav Scot, 1993. Page(s): 21" there are four cup marks on this embedded boulder, located in a cluster of similar boulders. Bardristane 3 Carved Stone is a sub rectangular rock measuring c. 4 feet ENE-WSW, 3.5 feet transversely and 2 feet high. There are 3 prominent natural hollows on the NNW edge of the stone. I located two cup carvings, more by touch than sight. They are on the centre of the rounded top of the stone. The cup carvings are faint, measuring c. 1 inch in diameter and 1/8 inch deep. Canmore ID 305891 lists this site as Bardistane 3, an alternative spelling.
