However, Coronavirus changed my plans and I went to Cairnholy instead, a good choice on a sunny day. Only other visitors were "Cairnholy Joe" and his friend, who were very informative about the stones and their shadows.

Anne T visited on 19th Sep 2014 - their rating: Cond: 4 Amb: 4 Access: 4 Cairn Holy 2, Dumfries and Galloway: From Cairn Holy 1, there is a gate in the stone wall leading up to this monument. In the field to the left of this footpath there is the remains of another possible cairn.
I found Cairn Holy 2 more atmospheric that Cairn Holy 1, but the ambience was spoiled by the close proximity of a bungalow and farm buildings (but what a view to have outside your lounge window!).
A smaller, only slightly less spectacular than Pentre Ifan, it is on steeper ground than Cairn Holy 2. The cap stone has two modern holes drilled in, presumably to lift it back into place.
With it now being late afternoon and a hint of dusk starting to fall, we wanted to go onto Anwoth to find the Holy Well and visit Trusty’s Hill.
In the hour we spent at Cairn Holy 1 and 2 we only saw one other couple walking a dog. Almost as quiet and empty as Northumberland!

Further information can be found on Canmore ID 63705 which tells us: "this Clyde-type chambered cairn, the one from which the farm takes its name, is traditionally the tomb of Caldus, the mythical Scottish King. Its outline is roughly oblong, measuring 70' x 40' and it is nowhere more than 2' high. The dunuded bipartite chamber is at the NE end of the cairn, measuring 18' long, including a pair of portal stones, there was also a very shallow v-shaped forecourt. Excavated by Piggott and Powell, the rear chamber had been previously robbed, and the other disturbed, but a leaf-shaped arrowhead and a flint knife of Arran-type came from the filling, along with secondary sherds of Beaker pottery, the finds are now in the National Museum of Antiquities of Scotland."
