Stone Circle in Dumfries & Galloway

Similar to the Glenquickan circle just over Cambret hill, here though the centre stone has fallen.

For more information see Canmore ID 63690which, from an original 1912 site visit recorded: "A stone circle is situated about 700' OD, about 1/3 mile NW of Claughreid. It consists of nine stones under 2' high, 9'4" apart forming a 30' diameter circle surrounding a boulder, probably an erratic, 5'5" by 3'8" by 2'1". Small standing stones are in line at NX 518 558 and NX 518 558 and NX 519 557", although in later years these latter stones could not be found.

A 2009 site visit reported: "NX 5176 5601 [Claughreid 7] Just a few yards W and downslope from the small stone circle is an outcrop of fine rock. One cup enclosed by three rings, with two cups in its outer ring; one cup enclosed by two rings, with one cup in its outer ring; one ring that encloses a cluster of at least five smaller cups; two cups each enclosed by one single ring; and 24 solo cup marks."

Claughreid
Claughreid submitted by Energyman : There are 4 recorded rock art panels in the vicinity of the stone circle, and this is designated as No. 2076 by the Scottish Rock Art Project. Previously only about 10 cups were visible, but on the 28th May 2019 I peeled back the vegetation for another 1.5m to reveal an amazing sight. A further 26 cups, 13 with rings, and a selection of glyphs. All un-weathered, presumably never before been uneart... (Vote or comment on this photo)

Claughreid
Claughreid submitted by Energyman : This one (the upper of the two) seemed rather suggestive to me of female anatomy, but I'm probably reading all sorts into it! (Vote or comment on this photo)

Claughreid
Claughreid submitted by Energyman : On a nearby rock Joe and I found this pecked art, apparently enclosed in a diamond, much the same as at the nearby CairnHoly 1. This taken 8:08pm 28thSep18 (Vote or comment on this photo)

Claughreid
Claughreid submitted by MDunbar : Visited the Claughreid stone circle as part of the Newton Stewart Walkfest. We were accompanied by one of the D&G council's archaeologists. He pointed out the cup and ring marks on the nearby outcrops that are not shown on the OS map of the area and hence don't have a separate page here. (Vote or comment on this photo)

Claughreid
Claughreid submitted by Energyman : This is a closer view of the distinctive boulder on the hill above. I tried to take various bearings from it but had to give up as it was so magnetic the compass wouldn't work at all.

Claughreid
Claughreid submitted by Energyman : Amazing man, Joe, can stand on several stones at the same time!

Please read the Megalithic Portal CODE OF CONDUCT (P11 in The Old Stones). Do not climb on the stones at ancient sites.

Another ring around a large central granite boulder. Of 9 outer stones, the south stone is very low, only about 20cm sticking out of the ground level. A very delightful location on a sunny day, and you won’t find any tourists here.

Don’t attempt to get to this circle in poor weather. It is very easy to get lost on these moors if you don’t know the terrain and tracks. You’ll need good boots, compass, and stick, and orienteering skills.
